Michael Calderone KALAMAZOO — Michael Calderone said setting the victories record for the Western Michigan University men's tennis team was always in the back of his mind. Broncos Coach Dave Morin hadn't given his own milestone — his 300th coaching victory — a single thought. Morin reached his milestone first Friday when the Broncos throttled the University of Toledo 7-0 at West Hills Athletic Club to clinch their seventh regular-season Mid-American Conference championship under his guidance. Calderone recorded victory No. 214, passing R.J.
Dunkle to move atop WMU's all-time wins list, later in the evening in a match against Kalamazoo College. 'It means a ton, to be honest with you. It's something I've always had as a goal, even if it seemed unrealistic,' Calderone said of his record-setting win — a 6-2, 6-4 decision at No. 1 singles against Kalamazoo College's Nate Eddy Friday.
'It became real this year, it worked out, and it's really, really cool,' added the senior from Jackson. Dave Morin Morin is 300-178 in 14 years at WMU and Bowling Green State. He has guided the Broncos to eight MAC tournament titles and is 258-131 at WMU. 'Personally, it means more to me that we were able to clinch the regular-season championship today — it's just a fortunate coincidence that it was No. 300,' Morin said after WMU finished 5-0 in the MAC. 'All it really shows is that I've been around a long time.
'I've had the opportunity to coach a lot of great teams that were successful and that rose to the occasion, and to go undefeated against conference opponents is a tremendous accomplishment,' Morin said. 'This team has been as focused as any team I've coached here.' The Broncos will host the MAC tournament, which begins Thursday. WOMEN'S TENNIS SWEEPS NIU: With six straight-set wins in singles play, the WMU women's tennis team defeated host Northern Illinois 7-0, finishing regular-season play with a three-match win streak and four straight victories against MAC opponents. Maggie Remynse, Nini Sujashvili, Maria Nivia, Jill Pastunink, Rachel Denny and Amanda Moccia all won in singles for the Broncos (13-11, 6-2 MAC), who begin MAC tournament play Thursday at Eastern Michigan.
GOLF THIRD AT MAC CHAMPIONSHIPS: WMU's Kaylee Imel and Britney Hamilton are tied for sixth place and the Broncos golf squad is tied with Eastern Michigan for third place after Friday's first round of the MAC tournament at Nashport, Ohio. WMU shot a 316, putting it behind Kent State (305) and Ball State (312).
Eastern Michigan's Sarah Johnson leads the field after carding an even-par 72.
